Day One and I don't get along. That applies to Day One of just about anything for me...summer vacation, first day of school for the kids, first day of work, a workout schedule...whatever it is, the emphasis of Day One means "THIS is the day everything changes." And while I am always thirsty for change and I feel like I do, in fact, embrace it, that Day One always seems daunting to me.
Such is the case tenfold with Day One of this seven day cleanse. Fruits only. Blech. And then belch some more. Followed by a full body shiver of grossness.
I don't like fruit, in case you missed that in the previous short paragraph dedicated only to my description of detest. I'm willing to go all the way to say I actually hate fruit. Given the choice between having an appendage bitten off my an alligator or having to solely eat fruit for one day, I would be open to the consideration of becoming an amputee.
So yesterday was a pretty bad day for me. Not only was it fruits only, the ONLY one that was abolished from the list to eat was bananas...the one fruit that I can actually tolerate, given the chance I can lather it up with some Jif. The strawberries couldn't be dipped in chocolate. It strongly encouraged to eat more melons, especially watermelon. That should be easy for me, right? Given the fact I'm black, it may surprise you that I don't have my own watermelon plantation in my back yard. I can tolerate it, but it does nothing for me. Kinda like reality TV. I can handle pineapple when it's a flavor in a pina colada smoothie. Oranges, nope. Kiwi, not really. Grapes, meh.
The other kicker, not only to Day One but to this entire cleanse, is obviously a large consumption of water. Well, it seems large to me but it's close to what every person should "normally" be drinking on a daily basis anyway. Ten 8 oz classes of water...roughly 2 quarts of water. I'm not an excessive intaker of any liquids. I just don't drink a whole lot of anything, not even coffee. In fact, I've discovered a really weird thing about myself, in that I only take a maximum of 3 gulps when I drink anything. Even when I'm super thirsty and I "chug". If I pop open a drink, I generally get accosted by the "finish it" policeman that lives in my house. I rarely finish any drink. So fruits plus a gazillion gulps of water throughout the day .... not my favorite.
When I was eating my dinner (this lovely piece of work on the left), I did kind of get a laugh from my son who LOVES fruit. We question sometimes if he's even mine... :) He came out to the kitchen as I'm trying to gag down my food and he says "Come ON, Mom! It's not that bad", to which I replied in my very mature and motherly voice "Speak for yourself". Thinking I had the edge on the argument, he then came back with "Fine...stay chubby." and walked his cocky skinny body out the door with a devilish smile.
Here's the thing with this body cleanse I'm on right now. It's only seven days. Day One is horrid for me. And though there is weight loss that accompanies this cleanse, it's not why I'm doing it. I just recognize now within myself the need to listen to my body and to take better care of it. For the past several weeks, I have slowly been slipping back into some old habits and I didn't like to see that. The one thing that always comes out when I do a cleanse is that it makes me appreciate the food I DO have in my house and when I DO get to eat it and it also makes me aware of how much junk food has slipped back into the cupboards. For some, that may be okay, but for me, when it's there, I'll eat it. And if I'm not careful about it, I won't even recognize when I'm eating it. So these cleanses, for me, are imperative now. It's a way to get me back on track. And I'm always amazed how much my body changes, in just a few short days of doing this. My skin feels better, my body recovers faster from a workout, I have more energy and am more focused....and I ask myself the question "Why in the world do I gravitate towards the junk?"
All in all, Day One is over. For now, I can put that behind me. Day Two has started, the all and only vegetables day. THIS, I can do. The cleanse actually starts with a baked potato for breakfast. Sounds good at first, until the realization of no cheese, no sour cream, no butter, no bacon hits. Just a baked potato to get some complex carbs in the system.

Day one down, you got this!
If you ever want something a little different (with far less fruit-sugar to process and much simpler), you might like to try a few days of vege juicing. For breakfast and maybe even lunch too, use a Magic Bullet to blend a handful of green leaf lettuce, handful of kale, 1/2 apple, tbsp of fresh ginger, juice of 1 lemon or lime, 1/4 of a cucumber, and a de-ribbed stalk of celery. Press it into a wire mesh strainer to get all the juice out, and enjoy (with a little bite of something with healthy fat in it, maybe even a straight up tbsp of coconut oil, to be able to absorb all those vitamins). It's actually pretty tasty. You could even safely do this for a few days straight in place of all meals if you up the juice to ~5 per day. I am trying it now for the second time, just for breakfast this time, and it feels great and is very easy.
Reading this is like reading my innermost thoughts! Your 7 day cleanse sounds very close to the one I'm starting tomorrow, but I'm too lazy to actually go back on your blog and see if it is in fact the same. :-) Good luck, girl and know that you are not alone in your suffering.

Season, I am pretty sure I repinned this cleanse from your Pinterest page, so I'll be lazy with you and just assume we're doing the same thing. I hope it gets better than these first two days...it's getting harder to get creative with ways to eat fruits and veggies :)
