Next Olympic event addition - synchronized treadmill running?

Every Tuesday and Thursday, I try to make it out to the YMCA to get a workout in. I like to be there because Paul spends time in the youth gym with TJ as he plays basketball and I can go up to the elliptical or treadmill and have a half hour of go-time with me and a good workout.

Today, my workout was one I will probably remember for quite a long time.

I went to an open treadmill and started to walk like I normally do to get my legs warmed up and find the playlist I want to listen to. I draped my towel over the screen so I wouldn't focus on the time or distance, just like I normally do as well. And just like normal, because of the time I go and the crowds, a lady soon came on to the treadmill next to me and began her workout.

The first thing I noticed was when she got on, she draped her towel over her screen just like me. Hmm, I thought, I'm not the only one that does that. In the next couple minutes, I had worked up enough of a sweat to grab my towel to wipe my face and neck. Within seconds, she did the same. Instead of draping the towel again, I just wadded it up and put in on the treadmill. She did the same.

Now, normally I don't notice people around me when I'm working out, but with her being close, I could see her actions in the corner of my eye. After a few more minutes, I noticed that when I walked, she would walk and when I ran, she would run. And when I would look over to see what her pace was, it was exactly the same as mine. Odd, I thought. So then I started to do things purposefully to see if this was an intentional pattern that was unfolding.

After a jog, I upped the pace and ran a little uncomfortably fast for me on a treadmill. I ran to an upbeat song and each step I was taking was to the exact beat of the song. To the step, this lady did the EXACT same thing. Our steps were on stride, like we were taking part in some new Olympic synchronized treadmill event that I never knew existed. Tiring after my pace, I took to another walk and again, she did the same. At this point, I seriously stepped off the sides of the treadmill and laughed to myself. I pretended to stretch my calves on the side of the treadmill and to my surprise, she didn't mimic my stretch. While off the belt, I seriously looked around the rest of the place to see if there were some awkward hidden camera recording going on and I was the brunt of their televised joke. Nope. It was just an awkward moment between me and the mysterious treadmill runner next to me, copying everything I did and synchronizing her workout to mine.

Indeed, one of those moments when you had to be there to fully appreciate the humor in it, but I couldn't help but write about it. And if you see me on some Just-For-Laughs TV episode one of these days, you'll know that you were the first to hear it from me!

That's too funny! Maybe she was taking a Psychology class. Someone told me once about taking that class and they had to find a random stranger and imitate whatever they were doing and gauge their response. Maybe not a hidden tv show, but a term paper instead?? :)

Definitely a Psychology student. Or a psycho. One or the other. :)

That last one was from me, Marcy B., by the way. Have no idea why it chose that profile name to post (that's a work blog I helped set up). So just to be clear, it's NOT from the psycho/logy student who ran next to you on that treadmill and is now stalking you. >:-}
